Redskins Offense A Mess Under New Play Caller Lewis

22 February, 2010 (00:05) | Recreation and Sports | By: Ross Everett

The Washington Redskins are a mess right now. Head coach Jim Zorn has a tenuous hold on his job at best and has recently been stripped of his offensive play calling duties. Management installed newly hired ‘offensive consultant’ Sherman Lewis as the new offensive play caller and the team has set up an awkward arrangement for him to get the plays to the quarterbacks. For that reason, starting QB Jason Campbell has some serious misgivings about the efficacy of the setup.

Lewis has only been out of retirement and with the team for two weeks, and has spent this week trying to ingest a crash course on the Redskins’ offensive schemes. While he was learning on the job, head coach Zorn was trying to put the best spin possible on what can only be seen as a de facto demotion and vote of ‘no confidence’:

“I need to have composure. I need to understand what the reality of the situation is, and I think our players expect me to rise up. We expect them to play under adverse conditions. We expect them to risk it all. … I’m conscious of what’s going on. I’m not naive about what’s going on, and yet I have to just hold back on any feelings and make the decisions.”

Quarterback Campbell is more concerned about the convoluted system of getting plays from Lewis to him:

“There’ll probably be a couple of plays I have in my head just in case if some reason it doesn’t get in on time.”

Here’s how things are supposed to work-Lewis will sit in the coaches’ box above the field and read the plays off a sheet. While Lewis has years of experience working in the so called ‘West Coast Offense’, Zorn left doubt that he really knows what he’s doing at this point stressing that Lewis “doesn’t know the protections” and “doesn’t know the blitz schemes.” Nevertheless, he’ll be running the offense when the Redskins take on Philadelphia this Monday night.

Once Lewis figures out what to call, that’s when it really gets tricky. He’ll relay the plays via headset not to Zorn but to offensive coordinator Sherman Smith. Smith will then inform the quarterback what to run. Zorn is left in the role of a passive bystander on offense, though he will listen in to the playcalling on his headset.

Backup quarterback Todd Collins also shared his concern with the new arrangement:

“It is unsettling. I’ve never gone through this before. I’ve never had a play caller get changed in the middle of the season.”

Lewis didn’t exactly evoke a lot of confidence upon his hiring, where he revealed that he’d been calling bingo games at a seniors’ center to kill time since his retirement in 2004. Still, Collins gave him a guarded vote of confidence;

“I know he’s been studying last year’s game against the Eagles and seems to have a pretty good idea how he wants to call the game this week. It’s the same plays. He might coach them a little differently or highlight some different areas, but the offense hasn’t gone under an overhaul or anything like that.”

The Redskins haven’t scored more than 17 points in a game this season, so maybe the thinking is that things can’t get any worse.

Zen, the Martial Arts, and Enlightenment!

25 January, 2010 (00:15) | Recreation and Sports | By: Al Case

The martial arts have long been held up as a vehicle for enlightenment. Indeed, this is the goal at the end of the path of The True Art. This article is about why this is so, and to enable the reader to reach the end of that path all the sooner.

Enlightenment is when light shines forth from the individual. With that light the enlightened being views the world differently. His perceptions are heightened, and he has a superior viewpoint.

If enlightenment happened because of the fact of motion, then movement would result in enlightenment. Hockey, ballet, football, all would result in an enlightened individual, but they don’t, so one must ask oneself, what is it about the Martial Arts that they result in enlightenment of the human being?

What is different is that there is fighting, and when one understands what fighting truly is, one becomes enlightened. What is the essence of this thing called fighting? One could sum up the subject by saying that when one finally understands that when he is fighting he is only fighting himself, he becomes enlightened, and a study of the martial arts does result in this realization.

The universe, you see, is a space filled with moving objects. Every object in the universe has a direction that it is going in. It is only in the martial arts that one actually engages in the study of the directions of objects as the one who creates the direction.

A fist flies through space at you, and this causes you to go through a range of emotions. Eventually, you give up emotions so that you can better analyze the trajectory of the incoming fist. Thus, you rise above the fact of emotional reaction and become cause over the motion of the universe.

A person threatens you, he holds a knife and approaches you, and you must divine the direction of the knife before it enters you. You must look at the world the way it exists, and not through some fantasy of how it is supposed to exit, and thus you look at the world you created. Thus, you rise above being the flotsam and jetsam of a universe awash with the shards of random motion, and thus you take control of the motions of the universe.

There would be no motion in this universe, you see, were it not for the fact of you. That star shines because of you, if it wasn’t for you, there would be no purpose for that star to emit even the faintest shred of light. And through the tempering of form, the steeling of will, the martial artist engages in fighting to give up fighting, and thus becomes an enlightened being free to roam the universe as he wishes.

Al Case has analyzed martial arts for over more than 40+ years. A writer for the magazines, he had his own column in Inside Karate. He is the originator of the church of the martial arts, and you can find out about the path to enlightenment by ordering his free ebook at Monster Martial Arts.

History Of Bolero Dance

5 January, 2010 (00:07) | Recreation and Sports | By: Melanie LaPatin

Latin culture is considered by many to be the epitome of passion and romance. The great Rudolph Valentino was known as the Latin Lover, and made famous the Tango from Argentina, although he was actually Italian.

One of the most sultry and erotic forms of music is the Bolero. The most recognizable music of this genre was written by Joseph-Maurice Ravel in 1928, although he himself was less than impressed with his own work and called it a piece for orchestra without music. This is the music heard when Bo Derek tries to seduce Dudley Moore in the 1979 movie, 10.

Such evocative music necessitates a dance just as voluptuous in its sensuality. Bolero is an American Style dance, although it originates from Spain and Cuba and the versions are quite different. In the 1930s, when the Bolero made its way into the United States, the music consisted of nothing more than pulsating drum beats.

Originally from Spain, the Bolero was danced in 3/4 time. Combining the musical genres of contradanza and the sevillana, dancer Sebastiano Carezo invented the Bolero in 1780. It is one of the oldest dances of Spain, and is faster than the version that evolved in Cuba. The Spanish version was a shorter, different adaptation of the Fandango. The Bolero was a type of Spanish ballet, whereas in the Fandango, a man and woman danced around each other in a simulation of courtship, never touching.

The Cubans changed the rhythm to 2/4 time, but later switched to 4/4. Jos Pepe Snchez is credited with creating the Cuban Bolero in 1883. Today, performers dance the Bolero as a very slow Rumba, with slow, graceful movements that stir the blood and excite the senses. In fact, the Cuban Bolero was originally misnamed the Rumba in the 1930s. It is a dance of barely contained passion, as dancers are hypnotized by the music into a living dream and the audience is carried away along with them. Since the dance is an expression of the music, it can be performed as easily by a single dancer, a couple, or a dance troupe. The tempo is moderately slow the music is often punctuated with guitars or castanets.

The Cuban Bolero had great influence on Latin America, and it is recognized as one of the first notable exports of Cuban art. The dance is performed with three steps to four beats, as in other Cuban dances. The first step is taken on the second beat instead of the first, and the meter is slow, quick, quick, slow, quick, quick.

In dance competitions, the Bolero is one of five rhythm dances in the American Style ballroom category in addition to the Rumba, Mambo, East Coast Swing, and Cha Cha. Of all the rhythm dances, the Bolero is the slowest, with only about 96 beats per minute (about a beat and a half per second).

The body rises, falls, sweeps and stretches gracefully, as if painting a portrait with determined movement. It takes many years to develop a true bolero style, but from Los Angeles to Times Square, if you have passion in your soul and you want to impress an audience, there are few dances as evocative as the Bolero.

The Story Of’77 Triple Crown Winner Seattle Slew

23 December, 2009 (00:11) | Recreation and Sports | By: Ross Everett

Seattle Slew died on May 7, 2002 at the age of 28. One of only 11 winners of horse racing’s prestigious ‘Triple Crown’ he is by default considered among the all time greats in thoroughbred racing. Of the eleven horses to win the Triple Crown, he is the only one to do so with an undefeated record. He was also notable due to his humble beginnings, and is the only Triple Crown winner to have been purchased at public auction. He retired to stud in’78 and sired over 100 stakes race winners including’84 Kentucky Derby champion, Swale. Slew’s offspring have earned a combined $76 million dollars at the race track. Slew wasn’t the most majestic looking creature by the lofty standards of race horses, but was possessed with the heart, toughness and courage of a professional prizefighter.

The Seattle Slew story started at a public auction in Kentucky–not exactly a venue expected to produce a future champion. Slew, in particular, was an unlikely heir to greatness. He was somewhat clumsy looking due to a front right forefoot splay and had a shuffling gait at trot. Slew wasn’t a beautifully majestic creature like his Triple Crown winning predecessor, Secretariat. In fact, he could have been considered borderline ugly–to the extent that he was nicknamed ‘Baby Huey’ by the Keeneland staff. What wasn’t apparent at the time was Slew’s mixture of championship intangibles–competitive desire, toughness, heart and enthusiasm. His owners had unwittingly stumbled onto an equine Muhammad Ali, and his competitive fire quickly became apparent to his trainers and jockeys. His first race came at Belmont Park in’76, and he entered–and won–three races as a two year old giving a glimpse as to what like ahead.

Slew quickly became a horse to watch as a three year old as he won three Derby prep races including the Wood Memorial. In the Derby, Slew got off to a terrible start as he stumbled out of the gate. He recovered from the miscue and essentially bulled his way through a pack of horses to lead at the 1/4 mile pole. Slew would win the Derby by a length and 3 quarters. He took another tough victory at the Preakness before clinching the Triple Crown with a 4 length victory in the Belmont Stakes.

Slew ran in a few races as a 4 year old but in the pre-Breeders’ Cup days there wasn’t as many opportunities for an older horse. He retired to stud in’78, where he sired champions such as the aforementioned Swale and’92 Belmont Champ AP Indy.

Slew may not have earned the appreciation he deserved in his prime, coming so closely on the heels of the charismatic’73 Triple Crown winner Secretariat–arguably the greatest thoroughbred race horse in history. The jockeys that rode him, however, understood fully what a special animal they were dealing with. Jockey Angel Cordero gave Seattle Slew this lofty praise: “If I had a chance to take any horse in the world, if someone said your life is depending on riding one horse to win, I would take (Slew). I rode 44,000 horses, but he was special, he was different. He was muscled, like a wrestler. He ran different than any other horse. It was like he came from another planet.”

Slew was laid to rest at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Lexington, under a statue.

Understanding The Differences Between CFL Canadian Football And The NFL

3 December, 2009 (00:07) | Recreation and Sports | By: Ross Everett

In the United States, summertime is when teams get prepared to play football. NFL teams start training camp, and college teams start practice. North of the border in Canada, however, summertime is when their professional football season begins in the form of the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Most Americans dont realize that the CFL has a lengthy and storied history. The league itself has been around since’30, and the Canadian Football championship–known as the Grey Cup–has been contended since’09. More recently, American fans are aware that a number of NFL stars got their start in the CFL including Doug Flutie, Jim Kelly, and Jeff Garcia.

While the CFL plays football at the highest professional level of competition outside of the NFL, there are a few differences in the game:

The most obvious difference is the football itself–the CFL football is longer and fatter than the NFL ball. The CFL still has their goal posts on the goal line, which the NFL moved to the back of the end zone years ago. The field is 10 yards longer and 12 yards wider than the NFL field, and the CFL end zones are 20 yards deep instead of the NFL’s 10 yards.

CFL teams are allowed to have 12 players on the field at a time, one more than is standard in American football. The extra offensive player is a wide receiver, and on defense they’re allowed an extra defensive back. CFL teams allow a team only three downs to move ten yards as opposed to four in the US game–references to a team going “two and out” are common on CFL broadcasts.

There’s also a significant difference in the way the game is scored. The first time many US fans see a CFL score update reflecting a 1-0 game they’re usually left scratching their head in confusion. CFL teams are able to score a single point, known as a “single” for a kick that lands in the end zone such as a punt or missed field goal.

The rule differences also extend into the front office, where teams are required to have a certain quota of their roster be Canadian born. In an effort to prevent the CFL from becoming an NFL farm system, and to protect the unique identity of Canadian football’ of the 40 players on the roster must be natives.

Perhaps the greatest misunderstanding is that the average NFL fan looks at the rules of the Canadian game with more players, a wider field, and fewer downs and concludes that the game is a wide open shootout similar to Arena Football. Thats not really the case–you’ll see some offensive battles but most games end up with final score totals in the mid to high 40s. In Arena Football, youll frequently see teams with potent offenses enforcing their will over and over again against teams with porous defenses. You don’t see that too often in the CFL. The rules may be different, but as is the case in American pro football you need a solid rushing game and a stout defense to win games and championships.

There’s also more parity in the CFL than even the NFL, which is famous for the competitive equality of their teams. The reason is fairly simple–football at the high school and college level in Canada simply isn’t as competitive as in the US. That means the mandated ratio of native players also serves to facilitate parity within the CFL.

Considering the 21 non- Canadians on the team, its also important to remember that the CFL doesnt get the pick of the litter of American football talent. Certainly those who have the ability are in the NFL, or on an NFL practice or developmental squad. While some players are uniquely suited for the CFL game–former Clemson University QB Nealon Greene, for example, who couldnt make the NFL but has had a lengthy career in Canada–most of the Americans in the CFL are players whose ability just isnt up to NFL levels. Remember Vince McMahon’s failed XFL experiment? That gives a good indication of the type of American player that ends up in Canada.

Despite the differences between the CFL and American football, at the end of the day its still high level, professional football. Once you understand the unique aspects of the CFL, it’ll become second nature much as NFL viewers quickly assimilate rule changes there.

You wont see CFL news on ESPN, since theyre more interested in featuring spelling bees and lumberjack competitions and letting their personalities like Stuart Scott show how clever they are than covering sports. The good news is that the CFL receives extensive coverage in the Canadian press and all you need to do is visit a couple of websites to stay up to date. Each CFL city has their own sports media, and most have pretty good websites. The best one stop shopping can be found at the leagues own and Slam! Sports, which is roughly the Canadian equivalent of ESPNs website and has extensive CFL news, opinions and statistics.

Is Gambling truly Up to Luck or Chance?

10 November, 2009 (00:17) | Recreation and Sports | By: Scott Hastings

Most people believe that greatness in gambling is exactly due to chance, or as many people would wish to think of it, Lady Luck. Lots of gamblers tend to think that if they succeed it is usually because they have been touched by Lady Luck. Except that also suggests that they’re going to have a winning run so long as Lady Luck is on their side.

But that sort of thinking is a sort of dangerous weapon. If it were right that Lady Luck was responsible for gambling success, then it diminishes any thought that the player is having success because of his ability as a gambler. Lady luck takes the whole thing out of the hands of the gambler and leaves it fully up to destiny. But if this is true then why is it that certain winners aren’t truly consistent in their wins? How do they win one day and lose the next?

Statisticians will argue that the reality of the situation is better explained mathematically to be more precise than by luck, or Lady Luck. They can quite logically explain the possibilities and probabilities of someone winning at any certain time.

in fact many people who are critical of gambling tend to classify games like blackjack and roulette as being members of the gaming business instead of the gambling industry. By offering this variation, they can then say that those games are based more on mathematical stats rather than any sort of chance.

There’s a question if you subscribe to the belief that it’s all Lady Luck. Not only does that suggest some type of primitive way of taking a look at something, but it also suggests that irrespective of what the player does, his winning or losing is based on some part over which he hasn’t any control. If luck is with him he’ll win, if it is not, he’s going to lose. It can , undermine his capability to play intelligently.

Believing in the luck idea can even send some people into doing weird and peculiar things. In other words, they may perhaps take extreme measure to do specific things to …quot;ward off malevolent spirits…quot; which will interfere with Lady Luck. It can even go so far as to effect the colour of clothes that they wear when they play.

One issue to bear in mind, statisticians maintain that it is virtually unachievable to get a royal flush. In fact, they assert the possibilities of getting one are one in 649,739. This illustrates more than anything that the general public will lose more than they will win. And that’s the entire basis of gambling… Losing.

So, keep that in mind. Losing is the standard in gambling and winning the exception. So long as you go into gambling with this idea in mind you won’t have unrealistic expectancies. But to think that Lady Luck is on your side and that you will come out a big winner, will only lead to disheartening results. The casino owner is the only one that solidly wins at gambling. That’s a guarantee.

Top Ranked Professional Golf Driver Of 2009

17 October, 2009 (00:14) | Recreation and Sports | By: George Statos

It was a great year for golf drivers in 2009, with numerous options to fit every budget and handicap. The technological and design innovations that golf manufacturers introduced help golfers hit the ball farther and more accurately – exactly what makes a driver great. A lot of professional golfers have capitalized this opportunity and purchased drivers that in many cases have allowed them to win important events.

The best golf drivers of 2009 have many traits in common. For starters, they tend to have the 460cc oversized clubheads that do such a nice job in generating maximum distance. Many also use proprietary weighting system to maximize both the MOI and the center of gravity.

Getting a good driver involves picking the type that suits your game. For many golfers, a game improvement driver is the way to go, because they are designed to help even off-center hits fly farther and more accurately. Scratch golfers aren’t going to care about those variables as much as the shot-shaping ability the driver provides, looking for more control.

Of course, these new drivers cost money. The usual dividing line between higher and lower-priced models is the $350 mark. There are a ton of great buys below that number, such as the Ping G-10, the TaylorMade Burner, the Adams Golf Speedline, the Callaway Big Bertha Diablo, and the Cleveland Launcher.

On the other hand, the TaylorMade R7 Limited, Nike SQ Dymo and Dymo2 STR8-FIT, and Callaway FT-9 and FT-IQ cost a bit more. Each is above the $350 price threshold that generally signals the higher-end models of driver. But each has enough features to be worth the money to those with a little extra to spend.

Whatever your budget, skill level, or price range, 2009 produced a driver for you. With a little effort checking out the best reviews and pricing options on the Internet, you’ll be able to find a club that meets your needs.

Cleveland Golf Drivers have consistently improved year after year and are now some of the best sticks on the market. George has just reviewed the Cleveland HiBore XLS Driver and the Cleveland Launcher 2009 Driver on his website, don’t miss out and read it now!
